2017-2018 Young Authors' Contest

Calling all young authors in grades 2-5!  Consider entering this year's Young Authors' Contest.

You can write a poem or short story.  See below for guidelines:

  • Entries must be original work.
  • Entries must be the student's original work; however, adults may provide help with editing conventions. 
  • All entries must be in Microsoft Word format
  • All entries must use no smaller than 12 point font in Times New Roman or Comic Sans.
  • Short story entry may range from a minimum of 300 words to no more than 800 words.
  • Entries of a violent nature will be deemed inappropriate
  • Each story may range from a minimum of 2 paragraphs to no more than 3 typed pages
  • Poem entry will consist of a single poem, any style from a minimum of 25 words to no more than 150 words.
  • Student names must not be on the story or poem, only the cover sheet
  • Entries must not include graphics.
  • Each entry must include a completed electronic cover sheet signed by the student author, parent/guardian and sponsoring teacher.  Type your name on the cover sheet only.
  • Submit a printed copy of both the cover sheet and entry to Amy Olson, Reading Specialist

The judging committee will select a First Place and Honorable Mention for each grade. Our First place winners from each grade will judged at the county level then possibly the state level.

*DIGITAL RULES: In addition to printing, your entry and cover sheet should also be saved electronically as a WORD document. School winners will need to submit electronic copies of both the entry and cover sheet to the county level contest.
